When we tell people we make our own shells, they invariably ask us, “How many plies?”
Our answer is: “None!”
Our drums are made of solid wood staves, from hand-selected lumber. Staves are long, slender pieces of wood (think of a wine barrel, only 1/4” thick), which we precision-cut. We then take all of the staves and glue them together to create a perfectly round, durable, ultra-lightweight shell with a sound you have to hear to believe!
Why do we do that?
One simple reason: Sound quality!
We are serious about our drums, and we sell to players who are serious about the sound quality of the instrument they play. Thin-stave drum shells produce the ultimate in attack, articulation and sensitivity. Every ghost note and fill is clear and defined. Because our shells are sensitive, they play more easily and often produce a much louder, deeper sound than any other drums of the same size, manufactured by other methods.
Another unique feature: Our drums are tonal and tunable. What does that mean for you, as a drummer?
Superior sound, every time you play.
When you play most drums, especially plywood instruments, you just get a general “thud.” If you play one of our drums, it will produce a note when you smack it with the stick. The particular note of your drum will depend on the size, what type of wood it’s made from, and how you tune it. No matter what note your drum plays, it will always be in tune—so, as soon as you start playing, your band mate’s heads will whip around and they’ll say, “That’s a great-sounding new drum.” (Trust us, we’ve seen this happen countless times.)
Now you’re probably thinking to yourself “Brilliant! Why hasn’t someone thought of this before?”
Even though people have produced stave drums before, the typical construction method leads to a bulkier, heavier shell that lacks resonance. We’ve solved this flaw in the design. We start with thin staves and then cleverly fit a slender reinforcement ring into the inside of our shells. This preserves the integrity of the drum—so that you can own a unique, beautiful looking and sounding instrument that will last a lifetime. The workmanship in our drums is guaranteed.
