Five years ago I asked why all drums are made from plywood. The answer seems to be because it’s cheap and strong. It’s not because plywood makes a good musical instrument, because it does not. So we began to search for the perfect drumshell.

It’s not about paint jobs, or freaky finishes, it’s about making the best sounding drumshell possible. I vowed when we began this work that we wouldn’t make the drums unless there was a significant improvement in sound, no matter how nice they look, and most people think they look pretty nice.

The original 20” bass drum made 5 years ago from scraps of spruce is still out in my back yard, getting rained on, snowed on, getting the heat of summer and the cold of winter. It’s till round and still plays. We keep several shells from our earliest production to monitor the effects of time on the stability of the product.
